How much should you save per paycheck for a goal?
Take what you still need to save and divide it by the number of paychecks before your date. That's it. The calculator does it for you by week, by paycheck (every two weeks) and by month, so you can pick whichever matches how you get paid.
A quick example
Say you want $3,000 in six months, starting from zero. Between October 28, 2026 and April 28, 2027 there are 26 full weeks, 13 full two-week paychecks and 6 full months. So you'd save about:
- $115.38 a week, or
- $230.77 per paycheck if you're paid every two weeks, or
- $500 a month.
If you already have $600 saved, you only need $2,400 more, and every amount drops by a fifth.
Paid twice a month instead?
If you're paid on set dates like the 1st and 15th, you get 24 paychecks a year rather than 26. A simple way to plan is to halve the monthly amount and save that each payday.
How the savings plan is worked out
We only count full weeks, two-week stretches and months before your date, so the plan never assumes a payday you won't get. If your date is less than a week away, you'd need the whole amount now, and the calculator says so.
Tips to reach your goal faster
- Set up an automatic transfer on payday, so saving happens before spending.
- Keep the money in a separate savings account, so it's out of sight.
- Round up: if the plan says $43.75 a week, save $45 and finish early.
- Give each goal a name, like “Summer trip”. It's easier to skip an impulse buy when you know what you're saving for.
Questions people ask
How do I calculate how much to save per paycheck?
Subtract what you've already saved from your goal, then divide by the number of paychecks left before your date. The calculator counts the paychecks for you.
Does this include interest?
No, it keeps things simple and ignores interest. Any interest your savings earn is a bonus that gets you there a little sooner.
What if my date is very close?
If it's less than a week away, you'd need the full amount right away. Try a later date to see a gentler plan.
Are my numbers saved?
Yes. Everything you type saves automatically in this browser, so it’s here next time, and nothing is sent anywhere. Private windows and clearing your browsing data don’t keep it, so tap Save or print: Save a copy downloads a small file you can open later, or on another device, with Open a saved copy, and Print / Save as PDF gives you a copy to keep.
